On a normal weeknight, Netflix accounts for almost a third of all Internet traffic entering North American homes. That’s more than YouTube, Hulu, Amazon.com, HBO Go, iTunes, and BitTorrent combined.

"People want their television to work like a TV. Sending tweets on Twitter, posting photos on Facebook and browsing the Web are best left to smartphones and tablets. Indeed, more than 40% of U.S. households with Internet-enabled TVs haven’t even bothered to hook them up to the Web."

Thanks to DVR and Streaming Services, “Binge” TV Viewers Abound
A February 2013 study by market research firm Harris Interactive looked at how consumers used TV advancements to watch when they want and “binge-view” TV content. According to the findings, nearly eight out of 10 US adult internet users watched TV on their own schedule. Of those consumers, 41% did so through a cable or satellite on-demand service. 40% did so through a web-based streaming service like Hulu, Hulu Plus or Netflix. 37% used a recording device like Tivo or DVR, and 29% watched physical DVDs.

"We estimate 3.74 million (3.7%) US TV subscribers cut their TV subscriptions 2008-12 to rely solely on Netflix, Over the Air, Online, etc, 1.08 million (1.1%) in 2012 alone. We forecast US TV cord cutter households will reach 4.7 million (4.7%) by year-end 2013."

"Eventually, advertisers began to find ways to reach even those ad-skipping viewers. They created campaigns that mimicked the look of the show they aired against—in some cases using the same locations and actors—in an effort to trick fans into releasing the fast-forward button. (There’s even a name for these spots: podbusters.) And they optimized their spots so that their brand could be recognizable even at six times the normal playing speed. Indeed, some researchers have found that fast-forwarders are even more attentive to ads, since they’re watching closely to see when the commercial block has ended."
